The incident occurred in Ulster County at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, on Libertyville Road in the town of New Paltz.
According to New Paltz Police Chief Matthew Sutton, a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2007 Saturn was traveling northbound when they passed another vehicle in the no-passing zone.
After passing, when re-entering the lane, the 26-year-old female driver lost control and hit a tree head-on, said Sutton.
The driver and a 26-year-old passenger both sustained serious injuries and were transported to Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie by the New Paltz Rescue Squad, police said.
The toddler sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
The case is under investigation, and the department is asking anyone who was in the area during the incident and may have witnessed the crash to call 845-255-1357.
The New Paltz Rescue Squad, the New Paltz Fire Department, and the Ulster County Crash Reconstruction Team assisted the New Paltz Police.
